Our Vision

The Kambona Foundation was created in [date] by the family of the late Oscar Kambona (1928-1997), a lifelong champion of Tanzania's struggle for independence and democracy. He was Secretary-General of Tanganyika National Union (TANU), the political party that brought independence to Tanganyika in 1961. The Kambona Foundation is a [legal status of the corporation].

The purpose, or mission, of the Kambona Foundation is to build the capacities for democratization, for conflict resolution, and for enhancement of human rights in Tanzania. The Foundation's strategy in pursuing this mission is to challenge and shape the emerging leadership in civil society. The tools of this strategy are historical research, articulation of vision, and the promotion of private philanthropy.

The Kambona Foundation pursues its mission for leadership in civil society through

historical research: The Foundation believes that the future health of the Republic depends on honest, balanced, and thorough research into the historical antecedents and roots of the Tanzanian state, its leaders and the factors that have shaped their strategies and policies, and the societal forces that have shaped both the progress and the reverses of the State as it has evolved to date.

articulation of vision: The Foundation believes that leadership in civil society, particularly leadership for societal transformation (also called socioeconomic development), must proceed from a vision of the common future of all Tanzanians. The Foundation strives to move from a better understanding of history to a clearer articulation of this consensual vision.

promotion of private philanthropy: The Foundation believes that Tanzanians have the resources to do this work, which is intimately related to the future health of the State and its people, and that private philanthropy should lead the way for the sake of excellence, independence, and integrity in the pursuit of the Foundation's purpose.

The Kambona Foundation is developing programs in four fields, which are all complementary to one another in the pursuit of its mission. These are:

1) Historical research and its dissemination
2) Courses in societal and corporate leadership
3) Courses in leadership for young professionals
4) Multi-purpose performing arts center
